Breast Milk Storage Pouches: The Complete Australian Guide

    Frequently asked questions

Yes — food-grade silicone is widely recognised as safe for breast milk storage. Silicone is made from silica (a naturally occurring material) and is naturally bacteria-resistant, BPA-free, and free from most chemicals of concern.

Always check that any silicone pouch you buy is specifically labelled food-grade or FDA-approved.

It depends on the pouch. Single-use plastic storage bags from brands like Medela, Lansinoh, and Haakaa are pre-sterilised for one-time use and should not be reused — reusing them introduces contamination risk.

Reusable silicone pouches are specifically designed for repeated use and can safely be washed, sterilised, and reused dozens or hundreds of times.

Boil reusable silicone pouches in water for 2–3 minutes, or run them through a steam steriliser. Single-use pouches are pre-sterilised and shouldn’t be re-sterilised.

For both types, wash your hands thoroughly before handling, rinse any residual milk from the pouch immediately after use, and air-dry completely before next use.

Breast milk storage pouches are available at most major Australian retailers including Woolworths, Coles, Kmart, Chemist Warehouse, Baby Bunting, and Priceline. Single-use bags from Medela, Lansinoh, and Haakaa are the most widely stocked in mainstream retail.

Reusable silicone pouches are increasingly available online through specialty breastfeeding stores and direct from brands.

For reusable pouches, most mums find 5–8 sufficient — enough rotation for a full day of expressing while some pouches are in the wash or drying.

For single-use bags, factor in 4–8 bags per day of pumping across your full pumping journey — typically 150–400 bags across 12 months.

Some pouches are designed to attach to your breast pump directly, eliminating the transfer step. Lansinoh and Medela offer single-use pouches with pump adapters, and Kiinde has a proprietary Twist system.

Most reusable silicone pouches require pumping into a bottle first and then transferring, though this is rarely a dealbreaker.

Good-quality food-grade silicone pouches typically last 12–24 months with regular use and proper care.

Replace them when you see any signs of tearing, cloudiness, damaged seals, persistent odours, or discolouration beyond mild natural staining.
