    Winter combines several factors that each independently increase water loss from the skin: lower outdoor humidity, indoor heating (which further lowers indoor humidity), the temptation to bathe in hotter water, and wind exposure on uncovered skin.

    Eczema-prone skin already loses water more rapidly than typical skin due to its compromised barrier structure, so these seasonal factors have an outsized effect compared to their impact on unaffected skin.

    Indoor heating is often the larger contributor of the two. Heating systems lower relative humidity, sometimes producing indoor air that is drier than the air outside. A family staying indoors to avoid the cold can inadvertently expose their child to an equally challenging or worse humidity environment.

    Managing indoor humidity with a humidifier is one of the most effective mechanism-level interventions available.

    It is primarily the dryness, not the cold temperature itself. Cold air holds less water vapour than warm air, which is why cold weather is reliably associated with lower humidity.
