Combined with the fact that you’ve been hours without drinking, the thirst response is biologically appropriate.

Aim for 50–100ml per night feed, taken as a few sips before, during, and after the feed. Across 2–3 night feeds, this adds 150–300ml to your overnight intake without significantly disrupting sleep.

    Several factors can contribute, but the most common is mild overnight dehydration affecting letdown speed and milk volume. Prolactin (the milk-making hormone) is naturally highest in the early morning, but the dehydration effect can mask it.

    Mums who fix their overnight hydration usually see their morning supply return to baseline within 1–2 weeks. If supply remains lower despite adequate hydration, see your maternal child health nurse, GP, or the Australian Breastfeeding Association.

    A large insulated bottle (1L+) with a straw lid, kept within arm’s reach. Cold filtered water is the baseline; some mums benefit from a breastfeeding-formulated electrolyte drink instead, particularly during heatwaves, postpartum night sweats, or intense cluster feeding periods.

    For most mums, plain water is sufficient. Mums who consistently wake up severely depleted, are recovering from birth in the first 6 weeks postpartum, are experiencing postpartum night sweats, are feeding through heatwaves, or have intense cluster-feeding patterns may benefit from a breastfeeding-formulated electrolyte drink overnight or first thing in the morning.

    Look for products designed for breastfeeding (rather than athletic recovery) for the appropriate mineral profile.

    It’s real and can be substantial, but it’s usually a normal part of the first 4–6 weeks postpartum as your body sheds the extra fluid retained during pregnancy. Push pre-bed and morning hydration higher during this phase, keep a change of clothes and sheets nearby, and accept the inconvenience as a sign your body is processing the postpartum transition normally.
