Labour Prep Date Bliss Balls: A No-Bake Recipe for the Final Weeks of Pregnancy

This recipe is part of the Nella Vosk Pregnancy Nutrition: Complete Guide for Australian Mothers — your comprehensive resource for nourishing your body through every trimester. This recipe focuses specifically on one thing: how to make eating dates in late pregnancy genuinely easy and enjoyable, so you can build the habit from week 36 without forcing yourself to eat something you don’t enjoy.

If your midwife has mentioned eating dates in the final weeks of pregnancy, you’re not alone in nodding along politely and then quietly wondering how you’re actually going to eat six to seven dates every single day for a month. On their own, dates can feel dense, sticky, and a little overwhelming — especially when your appetite is already being squeezed by a baby pressing on your stomach.

This recipe solves that problem. By blending Medjool dates into the Nourish Mama Lactation Bliss Balls Premix, you get a batch of 20 rich, chocolatey bliss balls that each contain the equivalent of one whole Medjool date. Eat three a day, and you’re hitting the research-backed daily dose of approximately 70g of dates — without even thinking about it.

At Nella Vosk, supporting mothers through the final stretch of pregnancy sits at the heart of our Maternal Wellness Support pathway — because how you nourish yourself in those last weeks lays the groundwork for everything that follows: birth, recovery, and breastfeeding.

    Ingredients

    • Nella Vosk Bliss Ball Premix
    • 20 large Medjool dates, pitted (approximately 480g — this gives you one whole date per ball)
    • 1 ripe avocado
    • 2 tbsp coconut oil
    • 2–3 tbsp maple syrup (reduce from standard 4 tbsp — the dates add natural sweetness)
    • Shredded coconut for rolling
    • Extra cacao powder for dusting
    • Vegan white or dark chocolate for melting & drizzling

    Directions

    1. Pit your dates if not already done. Place them in a food processor or high-powered blender and blitz until they form a smooth, sticky paste. If they’re quite firm, soak them in warm water for 10 minutes first, then drain well.
    2. Add the avocado, coconut oil, and 2 tbsp maple syrup to the date paste. Blend again until fully combined and smooth.
    3. Transfer the wet mixture to a large bowl. Add the Nourish Mama Bliss Ball Premix and stir until everything is thoroughly combined. The mixture should come together into a soft, rollable dough. If it feels too dry, add coconut oil a teaspoon at a time.If it feels too wet, refrigerate for 10 minutes before rolling.
    4. Taste and adjust sweetness. Because the dates add significant natural sweetness, you may not need the full amount of maple syrup — start with 2 tbsp and add the third only if you want more sweetness.
    5. Roll into 20 balls of roughly equal size. If drizzling with melted vegan chocolate or rolling in shredded coconut or cacao powder, do this now.
    6. Place in an airtight container and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before eating. They firm up beautifully once chilled
    7. Store in the fridge for up to 3 months, or freeze for up to 3 months. They defrost quickly at room temperature or overnight in the fridge.
