You have been up since 4am. The baby fed, then fussed, then fed again, and somewhere in there you ate half a piece of toast standing at the bench. Now everyone online is telling you to eat lactation cookies, and the packet ones cost a fortune, and you are wondering if they even do anything or if it is just clever marketing aimed at tired mums like you.

Fair question. Here is the honest answer, from someone who has read the ingredient lists so you do not have to.

What actually matters in a lactation cookie is the galactagogues, the foods traditionally used to support milk production. In this one, that job is done by oats. Not magic. Not a secret blend. Oats. That is why this easy lactation cookies recipe works as well as it does, and why you can make it at home in Australia tonight without hunting down a single obscure ingredient.

Too tired to bake with a newborn? We make these fresh so you do not have to. Shop our lactation cookies — the family-favourite Choc Chip, our traditional Fennel & Fenugreek galactagogue blend, or the gentle White Choc & Ginger for pregnancy through breastfeeding.

One more thing worth saying up front, because it is the part almost nobody talks about: this recipe has no brewer's yeast in it. Nor does anything we make. Most lactation cookie recipes and shop-bought brands lean on brewer's yeast, but it is a yeast, and in the early postpartum weeks, when oestrogen is low and antibiotics around birth are common, it can tip some mums toward thrush and leave others bloated. We formulate for every mum, not just the ones it will not bother, so we leave it out on purpose. This is genuinely rare. As far as we know, we are the only fully brewer's yeast free lactation range in Australia, and this may be one of the only brewer's yeast free lactation cookie recipes you will find published anywhere.

If you want the full picture on why, we wrote it up here: why brewer's yeast free lactation cookies exist. It sits inside our Milk & Nourishment Flow support, where we keep everything for the breastfeeding stage.

Why these ingredients help milk supply

Oats are the reason this cookie earns the name. They are a well-known galactagogue, a food traditionally associated with supporting milk production, and they are also rich in fibre and slow-release energy, which matters when you are running on very little sleep. Oats are a prebiotic too, meaning they feed the friendly bacteria in your gut, which plays a role in keeping digestion comfortable during the postpartum months.

If fennel and fenugreek are the traditional galactagogues you are after, our Fennel & Fenugreek Lactation Cookies pair both with oats and linseed in a ready-made box — the same wholefood thinking as this recipe, none of the baking.

There is a bigger picture here, and it is the thing I care about most as a Certified Postpartum Nutrition Professional. Gut health in the early weeks comes down to variety. The current guidance is to aim for around 30 different plant foods a week for a diverse, well-fed gut. This recipe alone brings 5 plant foods to the table (oats, almond, buckwheat, avocado, cacao). It is a small, real step toward that number, tucked inside something that tastes like a treat. That is the difference between a wholefood lactation cookie and a generic sugary one dressed up with a health word on the label.

This is one of 15+ recipes in our Breastfeeding Nutrition Meal Plan, a full week of supply-supporting meals mapped out for you, not just cookies.

Lactation Cookies Recipe (Easy + Gluten-Free)

    Ingredients

    • 1/2 cup almond flour

    • 1/2 cup buckwheat flour

    • 3/4 cup oats (gluten-friendly if available - leave out if gluten-friendly unavailable and you require a 100% gluten free cookie)

    • 1 tsp baking soda

    • 1/4 tsp sea salt

    • 3/4 cup almond butter

    • 1/2 cup maple syrup

    • 1/4 cup avocado oil (or olive oil)

    • 2 tsp vanilla extract

    • 3/4 cup dark chocolate chips (use vegan chocolate chips for dairy-free)

    Directions

    1. Preheat the oven to 190°C (375°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

    2. Put all of the ingredients except the chocolate chips into a large mixing bowl. Mix with an electric mixer or a wooden spoon until combined, then stir through the dark chocolate chips.

    3. Cover the bowl and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes. Scoop the dough with an ice cream scoop or a 1/4 cup measure into 12 portions onto the prepared tray.

    4. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, until the lactation cookies are slightly golden and set in the centre. Move them to a wire rack to cool before eating.
