    Nobody told me that the new nursery furniture I was so proud of could be affecting my baby’s skin.

    We’d painted the room a beautiful soft green. New cot, new chest of drawers, new change table. Everything freshly assembled, everything smelling of that particular ‘new furniture’ smell that I associated with preparation and care. I had spent weeks putting it all together before he arrived.

    What I didn’t know was that ‘new furniture’ smell is volatile organic compounds off-gassing into the air. And that for a baby spending sixteen hours a day in that room, with skin already primed toward inflammatory response, the air quality in that nursery was a variable I had never once considered.

    It’s not the only indoor air factor that matters for eczema. But it was the one nobody had told me about, and it took me too long to find it.

    What Are VOCs and Why Do They Matter for Eczema?

    Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are chemicals that evaporate at room temperature and become part of the air we breathe indoors. They come from a wide range of household sources: paints and varnishes, particleboard and MDF furniture, adhesives and sealants, new carpets and flooring, cleaning products, air fresheners, candles, and synthetic fragrances of all kinds.

    The research connecting VOC exposure to atopic dermatitis is well-established. A compromised skin barrier — which is the defining feature of eczema — is more permeable to airborne irritants than healthy skin. VOCs that are inhaled or settle on the skin can trigger or amplify the immune response that drives eczema inflammation. Studies have found associations between higher indoor VOC concentrations and increased eczema severity in children, with the nursery and bedroom identified as the highest-risk rooms because of the time young children spend in them.

    The problem is that VOC exposure is largely invisible. Unlike dust or pet hair, you cannot see it. The ‘new furniture smell’ is a useful indicator early on, but many VOCs are odourless, and off-gassing continues long after the smell has faded — often for months to years in the case of particleboard and MDF products.

    The Sources Most Parents Don’t Suspect

    New furniture and flat-pack products: The biggest single source of VOC exposure in most homes with babies is newly assembled furniture. Particleboard and MDF — the materials used in most flat-pack nursery furniture — are manufactured using formaldehyde-based resins that off-gas over time. Solid wood furniture off-gasses significantly less. If you’re purchasing nursery furniture before a baby arrives, assembling it early and airing the room thoroughly for several weeks before the baby moves in makes a meaningful difference.

    Fresh paint: Conventional paints contain solvents and additives that off-gas for days to weeks after application. Low-VOC and zero-VOC paints are now widely available in Australia and are a straightforward swap for a nursery. If a room has been recently painted with conventional paint, maximum ventilation for at least two weeks before use is recommended.

    Cleaning products and air fresheners: Many household cleaning products — including those marketed as ‘natural’ — contain fragrance compounds and solvent-based ingredients that contribute to indoor VOC load. Plug-in air fresheners, scented candles, and room sprays are particularly concentrated sources. Fragrance is consistently the most common contact allergen in eczema-prone individuals, and airborne fragrance exposure is a meaningful trigger independent of skin contact.

    New carpets and synthetic flooring: New carpet off-gases adhesive compounds and backing materials for weeks after installation. Synthetic vinyl flooring releases plasticisers and stabilisers. Hard floor surfaces — timber, tile, or sealed concrete — off-gas significantly less, and existing carpet that has fully cured is not a concern.

    Indoor plants: A word on a popular recommendation: while some indoor plants have modest air-filtering properties in controlled laboratory conditions, the effect in real-world indoor environments is not significant enough to counteract meaningful VOC sources. Plants are not a substitute for ventilation. Additionally, some plants release pollen or harbour mould in their soil, both of which can exacerbate eczema. They are not a recommended intervention for eczema management.

    Humidity: The Variable Nobody Mentions

    Low indoor humidity is one of the most consistently overlooked eczema triggers in Australian homes. The skin barrier relies on a certain level of ambient moisture to maintain its integrity — when the surrounding air is very dry, water evaporates from the skin surface (transepidermal water loss) at an accelerated rate, which directly compromises the barrier function that eczema-prone skin is already struggling with.

    Heaters: Central heating and reverse cycle air conditioning in heating mode both significantly reduce indoor humidity. A room that feels comfortable in temperature may have humidity levels that are genuinely dehydrating to skin, particularly overnight when a baby or child is sleeping for eight or more hours in one environment. The question ‘are heaters bad for eczema?’ has a nuanced answer: the heat itself is less of a concern than the humidity reduction. A cool mist humidifier in the bedroom during winter heating can make a measurable difference to how the skin responds overnight.

    Air conditioning (cooling): Cooling mode air conditioning also reduces humidity, though typically less dramatically than heating. It can also accumulate dust and mould in its filters if not cleaned regularly — both of which are eczema triggers. Cleaning air conditioning filters every three months is a simple maintenance step that removes a significant potential allergen source from the bedroom environment.

    The target indoor humidity range for eczema management is generally 40–60%. Below 40%, transepidermal water loss accelerates. Above 60%, dust mite proliferation increases significantly — which is its own eczema trigger.

    Practical Steps for the Nursery and Bedroom

    Ventilate new furniture before use. If possible, assemble new nursery furniture and leave it in a well-ventilated space or room for two to four weeks before the baby uses it. Open windows, run a fan — the goal is to accelerate the off-gassing process before exposure begins.

    Choose low-VOC paint for children’s rooms. Low-VOC and zero-VOC options are available at most Australian hardware stores at comparable price points to conventional paint. For repainting a room a child already sleeps in, maximum ventilation for at least two weeks after painting and before the child returns to the room is standard guidance.

    Remove fragrance from the bedroom environment entirely. Plug-in air fresheners, scented candles, reed diffusers, and sprays should not be used in rooms where a child with eczema sleeps. This includes fragrant cleaning products used to clean those surfaces.

    Consider humidity in winter. A cool mist humidifier running overnight in the bedroom during the heating season can maintain humidity in the 40–60% range that supports skin barrier function. Warm mist humidifiers are not recommended for children’s rooms due to burn risk. Clean the humidifier regularly — mould in a humidifier reservoir delivers mould spores directly into the breathing space.

    Clean air conditioning filters. Every three months, or at the start of each cooling or heating season, is a reasonable maintenance schedule. Dust and mould in AC filters are a direct airborne trigger for eczema-prone children spending extended time in that room.

    It’s also worth noting that the clothing and sleepwear a child wears in the bedroom adds another layer to the indoor trigger picture. Synthetic fabrics trap heat and don’t manage moisture well — compounding the humidity and temperature effects on the skin overnight.     The Bigger Picture

    Indoor air quality sits alongside laundry products, emollient choice, fabric, and temperature as one of several environmental variables that can be systematically addressed in eczema management. None of these alone will resolve eczema — it is a genetic and immune-mediated condition. But reducing the environmental trigger load gives the skin more opportunity to settle, and gives whatever treatment protocol you’re following a better chance to work.

    The nursery I put together with such care was not a disaster. But it would have been a better starting point for my son’s skin if someone had told me to assemble it six weeks early, choose low-VOC paint, and leave the windows open. That’s what this post is for.
