Galactagogues Under the Microscope: Evidence Update

    Frequently Asked Questions

The honest answer is: sometimes, for some mothers. No herbal galactagogue has been proven in large, high-quality trials to consistently increase milk supply across all mothers. Moringa and fenugreek have the strongest current evidence among herbal options.

Most food-based galactagogues (oats, fennel, flaxseed) offer good nutritional support for lactation, which may indirectly support supply, even if the direct galactagogue effect is difficult to isolate in trials.

Among herbal options, moringa currently has the most rigorous clinical evidence, including a randomised controlled trial showing significantly higher milk volumes versus placebo.

Fenugreek is the most widely studied but shows variable results. Among pharmaceuticals, domperidone has the strongest evidence base but is a prescription-only option in Australia.

It depends on what’s in the cookies. Many lactation cookies contain brewer’s yeast, which can aggravate thrush or candida overgrowth.

If you’re prone to thrush, choose cookies that are brewer’s yeast-free — the Nourish Mama range is specifically formulated without it. Oats, flaxseed, and galactagogue herbs like fennel and fenugreek are generally fine.

If a herbal galactagogue is going to work for you, most mothers notice a response within three to seven days of consistent use. Fenugreek is often faster, with some mothers noticing a change within 24–72 hours.

If you haven’t seen any change after two consistent weeks, that ingredient is likely not an effective option for your body.

Generally, no. Galactagogues are most useful as a supportive tool when supply is a genuine concern — not as a preventive measure for mothers whose supply is well-established.

If your baby is gaining weight well, producing adequate wet nappies, and feeding contentedly, your supply is almost certainly sufficient.
